If you own a Galaxy Z Fold or a Pixel Fold and are thinking about switching, the first thing to know is that the new foldable iPhone is a different shape. Samsung and Google build tall, narrow foldables that open into a near-square. Apple built a short, wide one that opens into a landscape slab. Here are the published numbers side by side.

Closed, the iPhone is 40 mm shorter than a Fold 7 and 11 mm wider. It is the thickest of the three, by 2.4 mm over the Fold 7 and 0.5 mm over the Pixel. The outer screen is the smallest at 5.4 inches, closer to an iPhone 13 mini in diagonal but much wider in aspect.

Open, the Samsung and Google are roughly square. The iPhone is a landscape rectangle, 21 mm wider than a Fold 7 and 41 mm less tall. The inner screen is smaller at 7.6 inches, but the shape is closer to a widescreen tablet, which suits video and split-view apps and suits reading a little less.
Weight
254 g is heavy for a phone. It is 39 g more than a Fold 7, essentially equal to the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, and 5 g more than an iPhone 18 Pro Max. If you found the Fold 7 pleasantly light, this is a step back. If you carry a Pixel Fold, you won't notice.
What the shape change means day to day
Coming from a tall foldable, the closed iPhone will feel stubby and wide, more like a passport than a phone. One-handed typing on the 84 mm wide outer screen is a stretch for smaller hands. Open, it is more comfortable to hold in landscape than a Fold and less comfortable in portrait. None of this is better or worse in the abstract; it depends on which state you live in.
