The question we hear most about the new foldable iPhone is not about the screen or the price. It is whether it fits in a pocket. Here is an honest answer, built on Apple's published dimensions rather than hands-on time we don't have yet.
The number that matters: 11.3 mm
Closed, the foldable is 84.1 mm wide, 117.8 mm tall and 11.3 mm thick. The width and height are fine for almost any pocket; it is shorter than every current iPhone. Thickness is the issue. Every iPhone since 2020 has been between 7.3 and 8.75 mm thick. This one is 11.3. That is 30% thicker than a 17 Pro and roughly the thickness of an iPhone 17 in a slim case with a card holder on the back.
Front jeans pocket
A closed foldable is passport-sized, so it goes in easily and sits lower than a Pro Max. Standing, you will barely notice it. Sitting is where 11.3 mm shows up: the extra thickness presses against your thigh in a way an 8 mm phone does not. If you already carry a phone in a thick case, you know the feeling. If you carry a bare iPhone Air, the difference will be noticeable.
Back pocket
Don't. This is true of any foldable. The hinge does not want to be sat on, and the closed shape is wide enough that it prints through fabric.
Jacket, coat, and shirt pockets
This is where the short footprint helps. At 117.8 mm tall it disappears into a chest pocket that a Pro Max sticks out of, and the width is comparable to a wallet. For many people this will be the most natural way to carry it.
Bags, purses, and small pouches
Closed, it is a compact object. Open, it is 164.6 mm wide, but you will never carry it open. The 254 g weight is about a quarter pound, noticeable in a light bag, invisible in a backpack.
